Record Covid deaths of 1,007; rate slips to 2%

India on Monday morning recorded 1,007 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, even as the mortality rate dropped to 2%, with as many as 44,386 succumbing to the virus in the country since the pandemic broke out.

The recoveries, however, jumped to a new high of 54,859 during the period even as 15.36 lakh persons have been cured so far, giving the highest recovery rate of 69.33% of total 22.15 lakh found infected in the country.

New Covid cases detected in the past 24 hours fell to 62,064 from the previous day's highest 64,399. There are still 6.35 lakh Covid patients in India's hospitals.

The tests carried out to identify the infected people dropped drasticall­y from the previous day's highest 7.19 lakh in a single day to 4.77 lakh even as 2.48 crore samples have been tested so far.

In terms of deaths, Maharashtr­a has the highest 17,757, with 390 dying in the past 24 hours, followed by Tamil Nadu 4,927 deaths and Delhi’s 4,111 casualties. Nagaland students to get study material in pen drives

The Nagaland govt has decided to distribute pen drives loaded with study materials among students of Classes 5

to 12 living in rural areas where poor network connectivi­ty hampers their online education, a senior official said on Monday. Two phases of online education have been completed since the closure of the schools due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Private schools, however, will have to pay for the pen drives. Assam top cop tests +ve Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta tested positive on Monday, officials said. The top cop has opted for home isolation, said a source.

Meanwhile, the state government said any air traveller to Assam who will depart from the state within 72 hours of arrival won’t have to undergo quarantine provided his Rapid Antigen Test result at the airport is negative.
