INK ATTACK ON AAP DELEGATION

As a stream of politicians visits victim’s home, UP govt provides security to her family

-

An unidentified person threw ink at an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation when it reached Hathras on Monday to meet the family members of a 19-year-old alleged gang-rape victim. The Uttar Pradesh government has now provided security to the family.

The case has sparked nationwide outrage. The Congress and other parties have been demonstrating in many states demanding justice for the family of the Dalit victim, whose body was cremated in the dead of the night by the police. It has also triggered a pitched battle between these parties and BJP, the governing party in Uttar Pradesh.

AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh was splashed with black ink as he spoke to media along with Delhi party leaders Rakhi Birla and Ajay Dutt. "Cowardly act in Hathras. Police took us in their vehicles to Gudiya's residence. Attack took place while we were returning. MLA Rakhi Birla, Ajay Dutt and Faisal Lala were also there. Yogiji (Adityanath), you are not a Thakur but coward. No matter how many cases are registered against me, do lathicharge or kill me but the fight for justice for the Gudiya will continue," Singh tweeted (translated from Hindi).

BSP chief Mayawati said it was time the government changed its "despotic and arrogant" behaviour.

Even as more and more leaders, including Left politicians like Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat, plan to visit the victim’s family, the Uttar Pradesh government

The state government has accepted the demand for providing security to the victim’s family members. Her brother told ANI, "Security was very much required for our safety. We needed it. We are afraid of threats. The coming days will be more challenging for us."

Two armed policemen will be on duty for the protection of the victim's brother. Along with the brother's security, there will be a deployment of 12-15 PAC personnel 24/7 in the village for the family.

The Congress continued to attack the BJP over the incident, with senior leader and Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “prolonged silence”. He tweeted:

"What has happened to you Modi ji? Where is your 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikash, Sabka Viswash'."

Unnao rape-murder victim’s 6-year-old nephew missing A six-year-old nephew of the woman, who was allegedly raped by 5 men last year and later burnt alive in December while going to attend a court hearing in the gangrape case, has gone missing. Ex-judge moves SC for probe against cops: A retired judge has moved the SC seeking a probe into the role of police officials in the Hathras case. A PIL by ex-judicial officer Chandra Bhan Singh says "callousness and highhandedness" of the state administration and police in giving treatment to the victim led to her death. It seeks a probe by any agency other than affiliated to UP govt.

"The conduct of the involved officials of the govt administration is a penal offence hence prosecution should be launched against the erring govt officials. Since the perpetrators are cops and the administration of the state, therefore, nothing can be hoped from the state authority, therefore the petitioner is constrained to file this plea,” the PIL said. India slams UN official’s remark on rape cases: India has termed “unwarranted” the UN Resident Coordinator's statement on the Hathras and Balrampur cases and asserted any "unnecessary comments by an external agency are best avoided" as the probe is still on. The Foreign Ministry said the cases have been taken “extremely seriously”.
