NEW DELHI, DEC 30: The greatest pacifist in this centur y, Mahatma Gandhi, had advised nation's to prefer war rather than succumbing to cowardice and evil.

Addressing a meeting of the National Institute of Sciences here, Prime Minister Nehru said that Gandhi ji had advised against surrender to bevil. If there was no other alternativ­e, he advised him to "take out the sword and use it".

In a reminiscen­t mood, he (Shri Nehru) said that Gandhi ji was the greatest pacifist he had ever seen. Yet he had advised stern action.

He added: We are facing a great crisis. We will win ultimately."
