INDIA’S VACCINATION DAY
1.91 lakh get vax shots on Day-1 Co-WIN app glitch mars drive in Maharashtra PM asks people to wear masks, maintain social distance
A humble sanitation worker from New Delhi, Manish Kumar (34), became the first person in India to receive the COVID-19 vaccine jab on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the world's largest vaccination drive at AIIMS, New Delhi via video conference. "Many staffers were scared. So, I told my seniors that I should be given the vaccine first. I wanted to tell everyone that there is nothing to be sacred. Even my wife had asked me not to take the vaccine. I have asked my mother to tell my wife that I am safe," said Kumar.
A total of 3,006 vaccination centres across all states and union territories were virtually connected and 100 beneficiaries were given the shots at each site on the first day. PM Modi cautioned everyone to maintain social distance and wear masks even after getting vaccinated.
As the world’s largest vaccination drive rolled out on Saturday, healthcare workers (HCWs) queued up at 10 vaccination centres in Mumbai, as well as centres across the state. The first day of the mass immunisation programme went off smoothly, barring minor Co-WIN hiccups at all the 10 centres in Mumbai and some centres in the state.
