8-year-old mowed down by mini tempo in Malvani

The people who witnessed the accident rushed to the boy's rescue, but he was declared dead before admission. Malvani Police are investigat­ing the matter.

An eight-year-old boy was mowed down by a speeding dumper truck in Ambujwadi area of Malad (W) in Malvani on Monday. According to sources, the boy was riding his bicycle when the incident occurred. The people who witnessed the accident rushed to the boy's rescue, but he was declared dead before admission. Malvani Police are investigat­ing the matter.

According to police sources, the boy, identified as Akshay Pawar, was out of the house, riding his bicycle around 11.30am on Monday. Pawar, who stayed with his parents, who are employed as daily wage workers and five sisters in a slum at Ambujwadi in Malvani, was riding in the residentia­l area, when a dumper truck (mini tempo) came in the lane. Pawar, who was to the left of the vehicle, lost balance from the cycle and fell.

Police said that they are yet to piece together the sequence of events of the incident, but believe that the boy may have lost balance. After the fall,

Pawar was mowed down under the tempo's rear wheel. The residents immediatel­y rushed Pawar to the local hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.

Meanwhile, Malvani Police arrested the tempo driver, Mohammad Hadis Ansari, and booked him under relevant section of the Indian Penal Code for ca7s8jh death due to negligence (section 304A). Police are also awaiting the autopsy report of Pawar.

Soon after the accident, Pawar's family and neighbours had approached police to demand justice, which police ensured in a bid to maintain the law and order in the area.
