Jackal spotted in Thane, suffers minor tooth injury
The Thane Forest Department, with help of local animal activists, rescued a jackal that had accidentally entered the city limits in Kharkar Ali, Thane (West). According to the official, it had entered into a medical shop from the mangroves near Bedekar college in Thane. The incident took place in the af ternoon on Monday. "With the help of volunteers from Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) in Thane, the Forest Department rescued the animal safely from the medical shop. The animal had entered the shop located 500 metres from mangroves near Bedekar college," said a forest official, from the Thane Forest Department. "The Jackal was followed by the group of street dogs that were barking at him. Hence, it entered the medical shop nearby and hid behind a rack. The locals in the area first identified him as a dog. However, one of the animal activists in the same area identified the animal as a jackal and alerted us," said Aditya Patil, president of WWA. "The jackal had suffered a minor tooth injur y af ter chewing a broom near the shop. The animal was later sent for medical examination by the forest and civic officials in Thane," added Patil.
The jackal was later sent to shelter at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali and will be kept under medical observation for a day.
