Singer turns traffic cop for a day

Shankar Mahadevan, singer and music composer, turned a traffic cop on Friday at Shivaji Chowk traffic signal at sector

17 in Vashi to create awareness among motorists of safe driving. He was seen giving away rose flowers to bikers driving without a helmet.

Police commission­er Bipin Kumar Singh and DCP traffic Purshottam Karad were also present.

As part of the Road Safety Campaign, the Navi Mumbai traffic police have started a new initiative wherein citizens can become a traffic cop for a day. Citizens can become part of the awareness campaign by registerin­g on www.trafficnm.com.

Later, Mahadevan also sang his favourite song "Suno Gaur Se Duniya Walo" on the occasion. Mahadevan resides in Vashi with his family.

Navi Mumbai traffic police are conducting a number of activities as part of the Road Safety Campaign from photograph­y contest to online classes for school students. In order to give an experience of becoming a traffic cop and understand the importance of following traffic rules, the Navi Mumbai traffic police started this initiative first time. While interactin­g with the media, Purshotam Karad, deputy police commission­er (Traffic) said the month-long road safety campaign will be involving common citizens to create maximum awareness.

Citizens who are interested to become a traffic cop for a day can register on the website while indicating the respective area. “They can choose a date, time slot, traffic signal, and the police station to man as a traffic cop,” said another senior official. He added that there are two timing slots.
