Amit Shah’s visit cancelled Cop instrument­al in arresting BJP workers for violent slogan resigns HC: Hold Municipali­ty polls in state

At a time when the entire West Bengal was looking forward to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally at the much talked about Matua belt in Thakurnaga­r, the West Bengal BJP on late Friday evening said that Shah’s trip stands cancelled. Citing 'unavoidabl­e situations', the BJP West Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh said that Shah's two-day visit to the state has been cancelled. According to BJP sources, a host of TMC leaders including Rajib Banerjee, Baishali Dalmiya, Prabir Ghoshal, and former Howrah Municipal Corporatio­n Mayor Rathin Chakrabort­y was about to defect to the saffron camp from Shah’s rally on Januar y 31.

New speculatio­n started in West Bengal as ahead of the Assembly polls, Chandannag­ar Police Commission­er Humayan Kabir resigned from CP post citing personal issues.

Last week, Kabir, a noted police officer, had instructed the arrest of three BJP leaders for chanting the ‘Goli Maro..’ (Shoot the traitors) slogan from newly defected BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s rally. Hours af ter the arrest order Suresh Shaw, a local BJP leader along with two other leaders were arrested at the wee hours of January 21.

KOLKATA: Calcutta High Court on Friday instructed the West Bengal election commission to consult with the ruling Trinamool Congress government and start the process of Municipal elections across the state except Kolkata Municipal Corporatio­n (KMC) election. As West Bengal is all set to witness Assembly polls in the next couple of months, Calcutta High Court has instructed the state Election Commission to conduct elections in all 100 Municipali­ties in the state except KMC.
