Along fissure appeared in Haldibadi chowk area of Chirmiri in Koriya district of Chhattisgarh leading to a chaos and destruction in the South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) Mines area. Private and government buildings including the offices of the electricity department and electric poles were damaged. “The South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) limited is a Government of India company. However, no human casualty was reported. Panic gripped the area and people said it was an outcome of administrative carelessness. The incident occurred late on Monday night,” said Ghanshyam Singh, the SECL general manager.

“After the incident, we rescued the affected families and shifted into Sharswati Sishu Mandir campuses and cordoned off the area. A similar incident had occurred in 2014 after which the area was demarcated as a danger zone but the illegal occupants continue to occupy it despite several notices,” the GM said.
