‘ Tax targets realistic, not conservati­ve’

NEW D ELHI: T he tax collection targets set in the Budget f or the next financial y ear star ting April ar e no t conserv ative but r ealistic, sa ys P .C. Mody, c hairman of the Central Boar d of Dir ect Taxes.

"I would not say that it is aggressive or conservati­ve," sa ys Mod y in an intervie w to Informist.

"I would just say that it is more realistic; I think these are achievable numbers rather than being ambitious and not meeting the target."

The government's tax collection targets in the past have come under criticism for being overly optimistic, but many analysts felt the revised target for 2020-21 and the next year are conservati­ve.

The Budget target for gross tax collection­s for 2021-22 at 22.17 trln rupees is a whopping 2.06 trln rupees lower than the original target for this year, primarily on account of lower direct taxes.
