Nigerian, accomplice pose and cheat as Customs officials, held

- STAFF REPORTER

The Borivali Police arrested two people for cheating a person to the tune of 10.5 lakh on the pretext of posing as a customs officer and agent, who demanded a certain amount of money in exchange for keeping mum about the illegal activities committed by them. Police busted the racket and seized 18 such debit cards and 10 bank passbooks.

According to police sources, the complainant was approached by an unidentified person through a social networking website, wherein he had introduced himself as a Customs department officer. After the introduction, the man claimed that the complainant has defaulted on the customs charges and asked him to make a series of payments through an online portal. When the man kept demanding more money, the complainant realised he was being duped, he approached the police.

During the probe, Borivali Police traced the Internet Protocol address and identified the main accused as Prince Ifyani Madukasi, 30, a Nigerian national. Since Madukasi was changing his identity and changing his residential locations, police found it challenging to nab him. His arrest later led to the arrest of his accomplice, Heyo Meiyang, 22, whose role was established during the probe.
