5 held for extorting Rs 6.4L from herb seller in Bandra

The city crime branch arrested five people for allegedly extorting Rs 6.4 lakh from a herb seller at Carter Road in Bandra on Saturday. The accused threatened the victim to file a case against him for impersonat­ing a doctor and extorted the money in order to release him.

The accused are identified as Guddu Hajarat Ali (38), Iqbal Shaikh (47), Abid Jahur (28), Kalim Khan (33), and Umrao Ali (36). Guddu is a history-sheeter with 42 cases registered against him and except Shaikh, all four accused hail from Kota in Rajasthan. On Saturday af ternoon the accused apprehende­d a herb seller at Carter Road in Bandra and demanded extortion of Rs 9 lakh otherwise threatened to book him for impersonat­ing as a doctor and duping people. On the same evening, the victim's brother gave them Rs 6.4 lakh to the accused in order to release him. The victim's brother Mohammad Farid Shaikh, 51 was well aware of the accused and how they dupe other members of their community gathered courage and approached the police. On his complaint, an offence of extortion was registered against the accused at Bandra police station.
