SC protection to AAP MP Sanjay Singh
NEW DELHI: The SC on Tuesday granted protection from coercive action to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in the multiple FIRs of alleged hate speeches lodged against him in various districts of Uttar Pradesh af ter a Press conference on August 12 last year.
A Bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R S Reddy also issued notice to the UP government for its response on his plea to quash the FIRs or club them together for hearing at one place. Cases were filed against him af ter his allegation that the state government was favouring a certain class of society in the matter of crimes. Even the Bench told his counsel that he should not try to divide the society on the lines of castes and religions as purported to be seen in his allegations. It also made it clear that the UP Police is free to seek sanction from the Rajya Sabha chairman to prosecute Singh in the cases.
