Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved an exgratia amount of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the labourers who were killed in a truck accident in Maharashtr­a’s Jalgaon district on Sunday night. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in the tweet that Rs 50,000 would also be given to those who have sustained serious injuries in the accident.

Further, the office of Maharashtr­a chief minister Uddhav Thackeray tweeted that the state government would also provide Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the victims. “Chief Minister

PM Modi expressed grief at the loss of lives in a road accident and conveyed his condolence­s to the bereaved families. Sixteen labourers were killed after a truck overturned in Jalgaon, police said.

"Heart-wrenching truck accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtr­a. Condolence­s to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," Modi said in a tweet posted by his office. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar offered his condolence­s for the bereaved families.

Avinash Dhakne, Transport Commission­er said, "We are enquiring as to how so many people were travelling in it as a vehicle carrying agricultur­e produce are allowed to ferry only three people". This accident comes at a time when Road Safety month is going on and will end on February 17.

India's January merchandis­e exports rose over 6.16% on a year-onyear basis, official data showed.

The country's merchandis­e exports during the month under review grew to $27.45 billion from $25.85 billion in January 2020.

"Non-petroleum and Non-gems and jewellery exports in January 2021 were $22.44 billion, as compared to $19.79 billion in January 2020, registerin­g a positive growth of 13.40%," a Ministry of Commerce and Industry statement said.

"Non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in AprilJanua­ry 2020-21 were USD 188.77 billion, as compared to USD 197.94 billion for the correspond­ing period in 2019-20, which is a decrease of (-) 4.63%."

MUMBAI: India's services exports increased to $18.72 bln in December from $17.08 bln in November, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India today.

Imports of services also rose to $11.50 bln from $10.12 bln a month ago.

"Non-oil and non-gold imports were USD 28.55 billion in January 2021, recording a positive growth of 7.50%, as compared to non-oil and non-gold imports of USD 26.56 billion in January 2020."

Consequent­ly, India's trade deficit stood at $14.54 billion in January 2021.

However, on a year-on-year basis, the deficit declined by 4.95% on a year-on-year basis from $15.30 billion reported for January 2020.
