Govt overconfid­ent, Covid’s not over yet: RG

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Centre of being "grossly" negligent and overconfid­ent about the handling of the coronaviru­s situation, saying the pandemic was not over yet.

The comments came after South African and Brazilian variants of the pathogen were reported to have entered India.

"GOI is being grossly negligent and over confident about Covid-19. It's not over yet," Gandhi tweeted.

With 11,610 fresh cases, India's COVID-19 tally has climbed to 1,09,37,320 on Wednesday, while the number of recoveries has surged to 1,06,44,858, the ministry said. The death has gone up to 1,55,913 in the country with 100 more fatalities reported in a 24-hour period, as per the ministry's data.

100 deaths in 24 hours

India on Wednesday reported 100 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours. There were no deaths in 18 states and Union territorie­s and less than 5 in 12 others. While Maharashtr­a topped with 39 fatalities, followed by Kerala 18, Tamil Nadu 7, Karnataka and Chhattisga­rh with 6 each and Punjab 5.

So far, 89.99 lakh persons have been vaccinated in the country, including those given the second dose. As many as 2.77 lakh were vaccinated since Tuesday.

As many as 11,610 new cases of the dreaded disease were detected in 6.45 lakh Coronaviru­s tests, but the recovery was still better at 11,833. The recovery rate reached 97.33% of the total infections of 10.94 crore while the active cases were 1.25% with 1,36,549 persons still under treatment. The death toll reached 1,55,913 while 20.80 crore persons have been tested so far.
