ONE day Samuel Foote, the 18th-century British comedian and satirist met the writer Charles Howard.

“Have you read my book ‘Thoughts’?” asked Howard.

“No,” said Foote. “I am waiting for the second volume.”

“Why?” asked Howard.

“Because I have heard,” said Foote, “that second thoughts are best.”
