Catch-22

- Melville X D'Souza

Ref.: ‘ Auto-rickshaw, taxi drivers apprehensive

about fare hike’ (March 1). A couple of months ago, when the auto and taxi unions approached the government for assistance, they were offered a fare hike. In view of the pandemic, however, the unions had protested and refused the offer. They were aware of the loss of jobs which had led to lessened demand. What they wanted was some sort of waiver on vehicle loans. Almost a year later, the economic situation is no better, so where do they stand today? Their arguments make sense. If there is no demand, they are looking at financial ruin. The question is, who benefits from this fare hike? It’s not the autos or taxi drivers or the public. Apparently, this fare hike is being forced on the unions. It’s a ‘Catch-22’ situation for them.
