We need a meritocracy
Ref.: 'Haryana okays pvt job
quota' (March 3). I was the general secretary of the All India Voltas and Volkart Employees Federation in the 90s. In our Mumbai office, employees were from different parts of India. In fact, we saw the real India in our office, as workers spoke different languages when they met workers from their state. Today, our politicians are calling for a united India and the same politicians are reserving jobs for the people of their own state. This attitude of our rulers will one day destroy our age-old culture of tolerance and peace among people from other states. I feel jobs should be given to all Indians on merit, that is the step which will unite the country.
