Three Indian institutes make it to top 200 list

Three institutes from India, namely, the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and IIT Delhi made it to the top 200 list in the overall Quacquarel­li Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2021 declared on Thursday. IIT, Bombay, stood at 172, IISc, Bengaluru, at 185 and IIT, Delhi, at 193 in the overall ranking. The University of Mumbai ( MU) stood at 1001+ in the band beyond 1000.

In the QS World University Rankings 2021 by subject, IIT, Bombay, stood at 49, IIT, Delhi, at 54, IIT, Madras, at 94 and IIT, Kharagpur, at 101 in the Engineerin­g and Technology subject categor y. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, stood at number 78 for materials science and at 93 for chemistr y.

Though IIT Bombay secured the first position in India with an overall score of 46 out of 100, the institute dipped from its 152nd position in 2020 in the overall categor y. IIT, Madras, stood at the 30th position for its petroleum engineerin­g programme, IIT, Bombay, and IIT, Kharagpur, ranked 41 and 44, respective­ly, in the subject ranking for mineral and mining engineerin­g.

The rankings are based on six indicators academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty to student ratio, internatio­nal faculty ratio and internatio­nal student ratio.

Globally, in the overall ranking, the Massachuse­tts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States of America (USA) secured the number one spot followed by Stanford University and Harvard University, USA, at the second and third rank. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA, secured the fourth and the University of Oxford, United Kingdom (UK) secured the fif th position in the overall QS World University Ranking 2021.
