CHENNAI: Trichy corporatio­n has embarked on an ambitious project to retrieve its Rs 42 crore tax dues, including that of property tax and user charge arrears from top defaulters. The Trichy corporatio­n in a press release on Saturday said that there are top 100 defaulters and the corporatio­n has already sent notices to them for immediate payment of the arrears and dues. The release also said that the corporatio­n has set a deadline of May 1 for the officials to collect taxes.

GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister of Assam Bhumidhar Barman passed away at a hospital in Guwahati on Sunday evening. The senior Congress leader passed away at the age of 91. PM Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed grief over Barman's demise. "Anguished by the passing away of former Assam CM and senior politician, Shri Bhumidhar Barman. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief," PMO tweeted quoting PM Modi as saying.

KOLKATA: With the return of peace in insurgency-affected Assam, the army has started pulling out of areas where normalcy has returned. "Assam has been a hotbed of insurgency over the last few decades. Various parts of the state have been under the strict vigilance of the Indian Army. However, with continued efforts over time, many of the insurgency affected districts are gradually returning to normal," army press office said in a statement.

NEW DELHI: The CBI apprehende­d two men on Sunday in connection with a Rs 72-lakh briber y case allegedly involving Arvind Kumar, Deputy Director General at the Directorat­e General of Mines Safety (DGMS), for influencin­g the members of the inter view board to ensure the qualificat­ion of favoured candidates, officials said. The CBI laid a trap at Bihar's Lakhisarai and nabbed Triloki Nath Singh and Kailash Mandal, a relative of Kumar, who was allegedly receiving Rs 35 lakh on behalf of the accused officer as the first installmen­t of the bribe amount, they added.

MUZAFFARNA­GAR: Two men have been arrested, allegedly for poisoning cattle and then charging hef ty sums of money from their owners to dispose of carcasses. The two were caught by the local residents in Kukra village and then handed over to the police. The residents, according to reports, had found the two roaming around on their scooter in the village, and when they were confronted, the accused could not explain their presence. Villagers had also recovered a 'poisonous substance' from them.
