Four arrested for bullock cart race in Ulhasnagar

The Hill Line police have booked four people for organising a bullock cart race in Ulhasnagar. After a video of the incident went viral, the police took action against the organiser for illegally organising the reace and harming the animal.

The police said the race was organised at open space near Usatane village in Ambarnath on May 23, 2021. The police said bullock cart races are the popular means of entertainm­ent in the rural part of Thane district. Usually farmers from the village organise such events and make the bullock run in speed. It further results in harming the animals. Even after a ban was imposed by the government, the villagers had organised it illegally.

The Hill Line police have booked four people who organised the race. The arrested were identified as Pravin Kashinath Patil 37, Sachin Vishwanath Bhandari 33, Gurunath Vasant Patil and

Mahesh Ganesh Patil. The accused are been booked under section of the Indian Penal Code, relevant section of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act and Disaster Management Act.

The police said the video of the race went viral on a social networking site. "The video clearly showed the cruelty to animals as well as the violation of lockdown

imposed by the government. A huge crowd was gathered at the spot to see the race, which clearly showed how social distancing norms were violated," said a police officer.

Local activist claims even after the video of the incident went viral the police was not ready to take action. The police registered a case on May 25.
