Ex-IPS who dared tread on Yogi turf lands in jail

Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, who had recently announced his decision to contest against Yogi Adityanath, was arrested by the Lucknow police on Friday.

Thakur has been accused of driving a rape victim into committing self-immolation outside the Supreme Court.

The rape victim, who selfimmola­ted with one of her associates, succumbed to burn injuries two days back.

According to the Lucknow police, the victim and her associate had levelled severe allegation­s against Thakur. She had alleged that the former IPS officer was helping the accused and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP, Atul Rai, in the case. The BSP MP is currently in jail.

The State government had constitute­d a Special Investigat­ion Team (SIT) to probe the charges levelled by the rape victim. She had further alleged that Thakur was hatching a criminal conspiracy against her at the behest of gangster Mukhtar Ansari.

It is understood that

Thakur has been arrested on the basis of the findings contained in the SIT report.

On Friday morning, the FIR was lodged against Thakur in Hazratganj police station under sections 120B, 306, 504, 506, 218, 167 and 195A. Later, the same day, the police reached his residence and arrested him.

During the police action, the former IPS officer offered resistance and termed his arrest as illegal. However, he was forced to surrender and taken to the police station.

Earlier, on Friday morning, Thakur had announced his decision to float his own political party and field candidates in the coming assembly polls.
