- RASHMI SHARMA Varanasi

After several years of ‘lull’, the Congress rally in Varanasi on Sunday, close on the heels of the Lakhimpur incident, generated a huge response. More than a lakh people thronged the Kisan Nyay rally which was addressed by general secretary and in charge of UP, Priyanka Gandhi. The meeting was also attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and several others.

The rally was organised at Jagatpur Inter College, one of the biggest grounds for such an occasion. The ground was jam-packed with crowds spilling on to the roads and nearby areas.

Keeping the Navratri festivities in mind, Priyanka began her speech by chanting “Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu...” to “invoke” Goddess Durga and said she is observing fast during Navratri. Before coming to the rally, she offered prayers at Kashi Vishwanath and Ma Durga Temple in Varanasi.

Enthused with the huge turnout, Priyanka said her struggle would continue till there is a change in UP. She said the state needs a change now and she will not stop till it happens.

In her attack against the state and the Centre (governments), she said, “No one is safe in this country except for a few billionaire friends of the Prime Minister and the BJP top brass.”

She said, “From unemployed youths, women, Dalits to farmers… Everyone is being harassed in Uttar Pradesh and the entire country. They are seeking justice but to no avail.”

She said the issue now is to

save this country and it is not a matter of election only. Farmers are fighting their battle to save this country.

Lashing out at the Centre on its privatisation bids, Priyanka said Air India was sold lock, stock and barrel for just Rs18,000 crore. She asked people if they got any benefit or development during the past 7 years. Priyanka appealed to people to come together and change things in Uttar Pradesh.

On the Lakhimpur incident, she said justice hasn’t been done and the state government is trying its best to save the culprits. The Congress will continue its movement till Union home minister of state Ajay Mishra is sacked.

Addressing the rally, Chhattisgarh chief minister said in his state…farmers are getting Rs2,500 per quintal for paddy while it is not so in UP.
