BRAHMOS – Indian Navy’s strength in ocean warfare
The Indian Navy, a unified three-dimensional force, has strengthened itself as a formidable, multi-dimensional and networked force that protect India’s naval interests, efficiently safeguard her seaward frontiers and defeat any threats to the national security in the maritime borders.
The Indian Navy is fully geared up with state-of-the-art weapon systems to ensure the sovereignty of the nation by defeating any security challenges which may emerge in the foreseeable future. Indian Navy, to add more firepower to its operational capabilities, has equipped all its frontline warships with the world’s leading supersonic cruise missile - BRAHMOS.
The Indian Navy, which started arming its frontline surface warfare ships with BRAHMOS as a “prime strike weapon” from the year 2005 onwards, has deployed the missile in both land-attack and anti-ship configurations to carry out littoral as well as surface warfare missions. BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile has thereby established itself as a unique weapon system. Its speed, precision and devastating power in destroying the target has made the weapon unparalleled in the global arena.
The Indian Navy was the first to place order for BRAHMOS. The missile system is inducted in a majority of existing naval platforms and will be deployed in other future surface ships. They are capable of both maritime strike and land attack. The missile is capable of hitting sea based targets beyond radar horizons. It can be launched in either inclined or vertical configuration based on the type of the ship. Therefore, all the modern Indian Navy ships have been equipped with BRAHMOS. The missile has also showcased its underwater launch capabilities following its test firing in vertical configuration from a submerged platform in the Bay of Bengal. BRAHMOS missile is therefore capable of being launched from submarine from a depth of 40-50 metres. The missile is now ready to arm the new generation
submarines.
BRAHMOS has also achieved historic milestones in the flagship “Make In India” programme by successfully producing major sub-systems such as booster, nose cap, canister, fuel management system and other major nonmetallic airframe components taking the Indian contribution to more than seventy percent. All launcher systems for the weapon are also being manufactured domestically. 100% of ground support equipment for the weapon complex are also being made in India. The powerful BRAHMOS has, therefore, become a fine testimony of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ resolve.
The potential BRAHMOS, developed as a fusion of great scientific minds from India and Russia, has grown from strength to strength over the years and added new capabilities to meet divergent war scenarios. Both Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and JSC MIC NPO Mashinostroyeniya (NPOM) of Russia have made impressive strides in joint design, development and production of the high-technology BRAHMOS. The supersonic cruise missile is a unique example of the partnership between both the nations in critical areas of research and development.
BrahMos Aerospace also prides itself in possessing a full-fledged design centre, an Industrial Consortium for producing different sub-systems, a worldclass integration, and check-out facilities with stringent quality control. BrahMos Missile Industrial Complex comprises of more than 200 Indian industries and multiple Russian industries, R&D labs and academic institutions of both the countries.
BRAHMOS has also emerged as a potential weapon of choice with several countries across continents evincing strong desire in the versatile weapon.
BRAHMOS has established itself as a major force multiplier; in modernday complex battlefields with its impeccable land-attack and anti-ship capabilities along with multi-role and multi-platform abilities. The missile system is growing from strength to strength in nation building.
Today, with numerous launches from various platforms, each achieving technological prowess with continuous upgrades BRAHMOS is a system par excellence.
