Lahiri shoots 73, makes cut comfortabl­y

SAN ANTONIO: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri had a modest second round of one-over 73 after a strong start on the first day but it was enough to comfortabl­y make the cut at the Valero Texas Open here. Lahiri (68, 73), who had a brilliant second place finish at The PLAYERS last fortnight, slipped from T-7 to T27 after the second round. The Indian is now three-under for 36 holes.

KOZHIKODE: Long distance runners Kartik Kumar and Sanjivani Jadhav as well as pole vaulter Rosy Meena Paul produced personal best efforts to claim gold medals on an action-packed opening day of the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championsh­ips here on Saturday. In the other events of the day, Aishwarya Mishra ran an impressive race to clock a personal best time of 52.41 seconds en route to women's 400m final.

BAI announces selection trials

NEW DELHI: The Badminton Associatio­n of India (BAI) on Saturday decided to conduct selection trials at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here from April 15 to 20 to pick teams for the upcoming major events such as Thomas and Uber Cup, Commonweal­th Games and Asian Games.

India beat England 3-2 in shoot-out

BHUBANESWA­R: The Indian men's hockey team beat England in a dramatic shoot-out after both the sides were locked 3-3 after regulation time in the opening match of the double-leg FIH Pro League tie at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday. In the shoot-out, the hosts won 3-2 to pocket two points (including a bonus) as against England's one. Abhishek (14th minute), Shamsher Singh (27th) and Harmanpree­t Singh (52nd) were the goal scorers for India in the regulation time, while England sounded the board through Nicholas Bandurak (8th, 28th) and Sam Ward (60th), who scored from a penalty stroke.

Minakshi to begin Indian challenge

NEW DELHI: Indian women boxers were given relatively tough draws compared to men in the 2022 Thailand Open Internatio­nal Boxing tournament, beginning in Phuket on Sunday, with Minakshi kickstarti­ng the country's challenge on the opening day against Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand in the 51kg first-round bout. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has fielded a 15-member squad in the tournament, which will be played till April 10.

Borgohain needs to change weight category

NEW DELHI: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who won the bronze medal in the womens 69kg category at the Tokyo Olympics, will need to shift her weight class for the Paris Olympics 2024 as her division does not feature among the six categories announced for women’s boxing. For women, there will be six weight categories (50kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 66kg, 75kg), one more than in Tokyo.
