Trinamool delegation, NHRC official meeting turns ugly

- ARITRA SINGHA

A three-member Trinamool Congress delegation on Friday met the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the Prayagraj incident, but their meeting turned out to be flop show as Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen got into verbal brawl with rights officials after they spoke of violence in West Bengal.

“During the introduction a senior NHRC officer after learning that I am from Kolkata claimed there is violence in Bengal. We all know NHRC is an independent body but such comments are unacceptable,” said Dola.

Taking further potshots at the NHRC, the TMC leader claimed the NHRC despite having a paper complaint about the Prayagraj issue didn’t take ‘suo motu’ cognizance in the case.

Now, Suvendu too wants separate N Bengal : CM

After BJP MLA Sankhar Ghosh, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assemby

Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a separate state of North Bengal.

Addressing the media, Suvendu said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee didn’t do anything to develop North Bengal. “Mamata Banerjee visits North Bengal as a tourist. When she opened Uttarkanya she said it was the secretariat of North Bengal but the infrastructure is so poor how can she serve people? My party will decide on the separate statehood issue,” claimed Adhikari.

BJP Siliguri MLA Sankhar Ghosh said when everyone was in favour of statehood, he was against it but now he too wanted a separate state of North Bengal after the ‘stepmotherly’ attitude of CM Mamata.

Meanwhile, on April 27, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared summer vacation for educational institutes from May 2 due to heatwave conditions, BJP MLA Sankhar Ghosh asked the TMC government to keep schools open in North Bengal and reiterated his demand of separate state.

Mamata in Delhi, meets Kejri, to see Modi

Mamata on Friday reached Delhi to attend the Justice Conclave programme in Delhi on Saturday along with other CMs and PM Modi.

Sources said she is likely to raise certain issues of the state. “She can raise the issue of backlog money that is due to the state by the central government. She might also raise price rise due to petrol price hike,” they said. Notably, at the time of reporting Mamata was in a meeting with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal at her residence.

Trinamool Congress formed a state committee in Tripura in keeping with the Assembly election scheduled to be held in March 2023.

While former Bengal legislator Rajib Banerjee will continue as the State In-Charge of Tripura, Subal Bhowmik has been appointed as the State President. Sources said a 6-member Core Committee includes Sushmita Dev, Ashish Das, Bhriguram Reang, Ashish Lal Singh, Mamon Khan and Bhowmik himself.
