- ASHISH KUMAR

This article speaks about the bedroom of a house, as to how a bedroom should be in shape and direction, the facilities, the arrangements. A good bedroom’s looks bring peace and happiness to one’s own mind and give relief to one’s physical and mental stress.

A bedroom in our dwelling is the place where we spend most of our time, while at home. The least we spend 8 hours a day in our bedroom, out of which we spend a lot of time to sleep. A person’s stay in a bedroom should be free from disturbances for both mental and physical rests and to maintain privacy. Therefore, the bedroom of a house should be constructed taking many important aspects into consideration.

Shape and direction of the bedroom as per vastu shastra

As per vastu shastra, a bedroom should be in the south-west corner of the house. It should not be in the northeast corner.

A bedroom should not be in a square shape. It is better to have it in a rectangular shape. A rectangular-shaped bedroom gives a good and healthy appearance than a square

The entrance to the bedroom should not be very close to the side of the walls. It should be left with a sufficient gap of a minimum of 2 to 2 and a half feet. So that space can be used to position some cupboard or almirah.

A bedroom should have good natural lighting and ventilation.

There should be at least a minimum of two windows on two walls.

Sleeping facilities in a bedroom

Most of the families use only double cots. The cot can be positioned in the south-east corner of the bedroom. The cot should be kept a minimum of 4 feet away from the wall. The head portion of the cot should be placed towards the south. Keeping our head towards north is not recommended and not advisable.

The windows of the bedroom should be on one side of the cot, and the other window on the head-side to get free flow of air.

The colour of the bedroom

The colours of the bedroom walls should be pleasing to the heart. As for as possible we should choose to select light colours. Also, the curtains and bedspreads should be selected to match with the wall colours.

General appearance of the bedroom

In general, a bedroom should look with pleasing colours and colourful curtain matching the wall colour. The cot and the bed should be covered with quality linen and well-decorated pillows and cases. The wardrobe should not be seen but well covered with curtains. The electrical wiring should be hidden and secured well

A well constructed and well-organized bedroom brings peace and pleasure to one’s mind and relieves his physical and mental strain through a sound sleep provided by the atmosphere prevailing in a bedroom.

Other facilities in bedroom

The bedroom can have a good TV system to watch while resting on the bed. Therefore, the TV stand should be positioned on the north in a comfortable position, or on the wall corner as convenient.

A computer table or a writing table can also be positioned at the bottom of the TV to conserve space.

We can place a wardrobe in between the TV stand and the window.

A dressing table may be kept on the northern wall and the wardrobe can be made on the western or southern side of the bedroom.

The safety locker can be placed facing North to bring better luck.

The wardrobe should be suitably designed to keep the clothes of the whole small family members. Even we can have a more safe safety locker inside the wardrobes to ensure safety and security.

There should be a small side rack available near the side of the head portion of the cot. This will facilitate to keep the Medicines, TV DVD remotes, AC control switches cell phones, etc;

The cot should have a rack facility under the bed to store extra bed, pillows, bedspreads, etc. If anyone finds it inconvenient they can construct a separate loft to meet the purpose on the wall itself.

As we are getting the modular kitchen wears from the market, we too can get kit for modular bedrooms.

An attached bathroom in a convenient area is an additional need.
