Uber to extend city team amid rider complaints

- SHASHANK RAO

At a time when app-based cab operators are under fire from the government over several issues, Uber Technologies announced a new round of recruitment on Wednesday for its India tech centres, and plans to hire 500 more tech employees by December. The app-based mobility and delivery company has 1,000 members across its centres in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

As per Uber vice-president and head of mobility engineering, Praveen Neppalli Naga, the teams play a crucial role in driving worldclass innovations by launching products and services globally. However, government sources and transport experts claim that technology is unable to bring relief to end-passengers using their app to travel.

Earlier, the Centre had warned cab aggregators of strict action unless they improve their systems amid rising consumer complaints regarding alleged unfair trade practices, including ride cancellation policy.

Hinting at the scale of customer unhappiness, the Central Consumer Protection Authority has asked cab aggregators to immediately come out with solutions. Sources said that the induction of new tech teams is likely to be a step towards improving the technology.

“Uber is looking for the best-in-class engineers, data scientists, and program managers to join its global engineering and product teams, with the aim of ‘Building locally, and scaling globally’,” said Manikandan Thangarathnam, Senior Director - Engineering, Uber. “We are excited about the possibilities that a rapidly evolving mobility space presents, and will continue to lead innovations for our customers across the world.”
