The Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police, led by commissioner Sadanand Date, has ranked first in Maharashtra in terms of conviction rate. With the collective efforts of strong prosecution, the force has been able to reach a justified closure in many Indian Penal Code cases hence achieving a conviction rate of 89.63 per cent. The conviction rate is the number of cases per hundred in which the court has held the accused guilty and awarded punishment.

With 58.48 per cent conviction, Amravati stood second followed by Navi Mumbai and Thane as these two places recorded 54.74 per cent and 54.08 per cent convictions, respectively. However, the Mumbai police remained a distant fifth with 52.14 per cent, while Nashik was at the bottom of the list with just 18.17 per cent.

Officials attributed success in improving the conviction rate to various measures including proper investigation, filing of watertight chargesheets, regular monitoring of cases, forensic reports supported by strong evidence and statements of witnesses.

In another dutiful feat, the MBVV has also registered a significant jump in the crime detection rate. The force has found its place in the top five by recording a 76.08 per cent detection rate. Here Amravati

and Aurangabad bagged the first and second spots by recording 88.85 per cent and 85.30 per cent crime detection rate, respectively.

The MBVV began with limited manpower and resources, including 13 police stations, two traffic units and few other branches. While one more traffic unit and three more police stations have been added, four more police stations are on the anvil.
