MINOR DALIT SISTERS FOUND HANGING IN LAKHIMPUR

- RASHMI SHARMA Lucknow

In a tragic incident, two minor Dalit sisters were found hanging from a tree in Lakhimpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening. Their family alleged that the Dalit siblings were kidnapped from their house and murdered before hanging them from the tree. Bike-borne youths had come to their house to kidnap them.

The incident took place in Tamolinpurwa village of Nighasan tehsil, where their bodies found in a sugarcane field on the outskirts of the district. The sisters were alone at home as their parents had gone to fields. While the police are investigating the matter, the state government sent Lakshmi Singh, the range inspector general to oversee the investigation.

According to the Additional DGP, law & order, Prashant Kumar, the police have launched an investigation into the incident and a team of officials has been sent to Lakhimpur. The bodies of the girls were sent for the postmortem, which will be videographed. An FIR has been lodged on the family’s complaint.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi said the murder of two sisters has exposed the tall claims of law & order in UP. In a tweet, she said, “The two sisters were kidnapped in broad daylight and killed. Law & order cannot be improved by giving false advertisements. The crime against women is on the rise in UP. When would the state government wake up?”

Former UP chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “After farmers, the killing of Dalits is a repeat of the Hathras episode in the state. The girls’ father has levelled serious allegations against the police.”
