- SHEFALI PARAB-PANDIT

Heavy rains lashed the city on Friday morning, subsiding by noon. The city received between 52-93 mm of rainfall in the western suburbs from Malad to Dahisar, while Kandivali recorded the highest rainfall in a day (93.2 mm). Suburban train services of Central Railway (CR) and fast local train services were running 15 minutes behind schedule. Meanwhile, the monthly target of 383 mm rainfall has already been surpassed with 396 mm rain till September 16.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded 37.71 mm of rain in the last 24 hours ending on Friday at 8.30 am, while the eastern suburbs received 43.38 mm and the western suburbs recorded 36.88 mm of rain. Western parts of the city including Khar, Andheri, Malad, Goregaon, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar witnessed more rainfall. The Andheri subway was shut for some time due to water logging in the morning. However, the intermittent rain in between did not affect the low-lying areas severely.

The IMD Colaba observatory recorded 17.8 mm of rain while the Santacruz observatory recorded 18.9 mm of rain for 12 hours, till 6 pm on Friday. “The heavy rains were due to a low-pressure area over central parts of Uttar Pradesh and across the east-central and north-east Arabian Sea, south Gujarat region and west Madhya Pradesh. There is also a trough from the west-central Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation with low pressure and strong westerly winds. Due to this, Mumbai and adjoining areas are getting rain. The city can expect only moderate rains on Saturday,” said a senior official from the IMD.

Meanwhile, a CR spokesperson said train services on all the four suburban corridors are running, with a few running up to 15 minutes behind schedule. However, the Western Railway (WR) spokesperson claimed that all services were running as per schedule and no major waterlogging was reported in the suburban section of WR. Similarly, the BEST spokesperson said all bus services were running as per schedule.

There were 11 incidents of tree falls and two house collapses while four short circuits were reported in the city. However, no injuries were reported due to these incidents, confirmed the BMC's disaster management cell.
