A DIFFERENT MOTHER

Swastika spills the beans on working on a film like Qala, her director Anvitaa Dutt, and more

- ROHIT BHATNAGAR

wastika Mukherjee, who is currently on cloud nine with her on-going episodic series Criminal Justice season 3, is gearing up for her next digital release, which is a feature Qala film helmed by writer-director Anvitaa Dutt. While Triptii Dimri plays the titular role, the film also stars the late Irrfan’s son Babil Khan and Amit Sial in the pivotal roles. At a recent launch event, where the makers unveiled the first look of the film, the team also introduced Babil to the world of cinema. Excited Swastika, who plays the role of Triptii’s mother, shares, “I am very thrilled, honoured and proud to be a part of a film like

Qala. When I got a call from Anvitaa’s team, they told me that I didn’t have to audition for it. My panic mode was on since I couldn’t believe it.” While showering praises on her director, Anvitaa Dutt, she reveals, “She is an amazing person and she made everyone look confident around her. I have never looked this beautiful in any project on-screen. After working with her, I found newness in myself. Anvitaa sees beauty in everything. I thank her for giving me Urmila.” While talking about her role as Urmila, she concludes, “Urmila is a very different mother from the mothers you have seen on screen. I feel there is so much love as parents that we often don’t share with our children, but when we do, it’s too late. There are certain norms that parents need to follow, but

Qala and my characters break that in a way. When we see someone playing the role of a mother, we ignore the fact that she is a woman too. Having worked for so many years, I needed someone to push me as an actor.”
