- DIGJYOTI LAHKAR /

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth `11,000 crore in Assam on Sunday and said the projects will boost employment in the tourism sector and create opportunities for sporting talent to flourish in the state.

Modi laid the foundation stones for the construction of the `498 crore Kamakhya Corridor project, the `300 crore Chandrapur sports complex project, and a `358 crore road project, at a function held at the Veterinary College at Khanapara.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of the Asom Mala project consisting of 43 roads and 38 bridges, the `831 crore Nehru Stadium upgradation project, the `578 crore Karimganj Medical College and the `297 crore Unity Mall project.

Modi also dedicated to the people the `1,451 crore four Laning from Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur and the `592 crore four Laning from Dolabari to Jamuguri.

The development projects will boost Assam’s connectivity to the northeastern states and the neighbouring countries, the Prime Minister contended at the rally.

“A little while ago, the foundation stone of projects worth `11,000 crore was laid and inaugurated here. All these projects will strengthen the connectivity of the region with Assam and Northeast as well as other countries of South Asia,” Modi said.

“These projects will create employment in the tourism sector in Assam and will also provide new opportunities for sporting talent to flourish. These will also expand Assam’s role as a medical education and healthcare centre,” he said.

“After the grand event in Ayodhya, I have now come here to the doorstep of Maa Kamakhya. Today I had the privilege of laying the foundation stone of Maa Kamakhya Divya Lok Project here. When it is completed, it will fill the devotees of Maa Goddess from all over the country and the world with immense joy,” Modi said.

“Assam will become the gateway to tourism in the Northeast with an increase in the footfall of devotees for Maa Kamakhya’s darshan,” the Prime Minister said, lauding the efforts of the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The PM lamented that postIndependence governments had started a trend of being ashamed of one’s own culture and identity for political gains and failing to understand the importance of Bharat’s holy places.

Modi also said that prominent educational institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) earlier used to be set up only in big cities. However, now a network of IITs, IIMs and the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences has spread across the country with the total number of medical colleges in Assam increasing from 6 to 12.

He also asserted that the state will become a hub for cancer treatment in the Northeast.

The Prime Minister said the government is giving special emphasis to the development of northeastern states. The government has increased the region’s development expenditure four fold, Modi said. The length of railway tracks laid increased by more than 1,900 kilometres, the railway budget was boosted by almost 400 per cent and 6,000 kilometres of new national highways were constructed in the last 10 years compared to 10,000 kilometres till 2014, Modi said.

“Modi’s guarantee means the guarantee of fulfilment,” the Prime Minister said, while talking about basic facilities to the poor, women, youth and farmers.

Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Sarma, Union minister for Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal and other senior ministers attended the function.
