‘Art is a way of life and not just a mere subject’

FACE TO FACE

Art is a form of expression in which every stroke, texture and colour speaks. Anita Goel, known for her contributions in the field of contemporary art, believes that art must be a flow of creativity and expression – natural, free and unrestricted. As she displays her canvas creations in a solo show in Mumbai this February, she speaks to Swarna Srikanth. Excerpts:

What does art mean to you?

Art is a way of life and not a mere subject. Every artwork is unique and good, so no art must be judged. Also, every person is an artist, either known or undiscovered.

Your creations embrace the canvas too. Can you tell us more about the uniqueness of your artworks?

The uniqueness in my paintings extends to the canvas itself as I shape them differently, ditching the standard square frame. I enjoy playing with the medium, which is often overlooked by many. I give importance to it, and it brings out the characteristics of my work.

Of the other art forms, is abstract art something you love the most?

I admit that my heart beats for abstract art as it allows me to be free and more expressive. I have also involved myself in creating large portraits, but abstract art is my personal favourite. I just love it.

Who is your inspiration?

I admire the heart-touching paintings of Van Gogh, whom I consider to be my forever inspiration. I am a huge fan of Van Gogh. He happens to be my all-time favourite.

Your stunning art pieces are sold for lakhs. Do you think art is only affordable to the rich and the elite?

I somewhat agree, but the scenes are changing and the artworks are getting affordable.

With art fests and displays common to the city, why go for a solo exhibition?

My art doesn’t really follow any rules or stay confined to a theme. I am more

comfortable with solo shows because of the different shapes and huge sizes of my artwork. I don't want to struggle fitting in anywhere, be it along with artworks that are on square canvases or themes that are specified for group art shows. However, I am not closed to displaying my creations at group shows either. It’s just about preference.

What’s the idea behind Avataran, your art show at Jolie's in Worli?

I aim to draw the attention of authorities to elementary school art education and convey how children being taught to draw and sketch in a particular format curtails their creativity and imaginative skills. Exposing kids to art is great, but telling them rules to create art is not. No boundaries, no margins. Art must not be restricted.
