Unable to pay monthly maintenance to wife, 34-yr-old man ends life

- RAINA ASSAINAR / NAVI MUMBAI

Fed up with paying monthly maintenance to his wife, a 34year-old unemployed man from Digha in Navi Mumbai ended his life by consuming poison. The Rabale police have booked the man’s wife, her second husband and her father for abetment to suicide. The father of the deceased, who runs a gym at Rabale, approached the police on April 14 and registered a case against the trio.

The deceased, Gokul Vithoba Dange, married Deepali on March 2, 2015, at Washim taluka. At the time of Diwali in 2016, the couple had an altercation, following which Deepali asked her father, Dipak Hajare, to take her back home and then never went back.

As per the complainant, Vithoba Dange, 64, the deceased’s father, Deepali had approached the Judicial Magistrate First Class of Washim and filed a case of domestic violence against his son Gokul. On February 6, 2017, the court ordered Gokul to pay Rs5,000 monthly to

Deepali as maintenance. Dange, in his complaint, mentioned that Gokul was unemployed and had no means of income and paying the maintenance was difficult for him. He stayed alone in Digha while his parents lived nearby. He later discovered that Deepali had married Shyam Kshirsagar, 35, but he was still made to pay the monthly maintenance. On March 29, when Gokul’s mother went to meet him, he didn’t open the door. His parents then asked someone to enter the house from the window. Following this, the family found him lying unresponsive on the bed. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. On further investigations, the police found a suicide note in the room wherein he named his wife, her second husband and her father for traumatising him and pushing him to take the extreme step, a police officer from Rabale MIDC police station said. The police have served a notice to all three accused to be present for the investigations.
