Locals brave bad weather to join Priyanka roadshow

- DIGJYOTI / GUWAHATI

A sea of people joined Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s roadshow braving the adverse weather conditions in Titabar in support of Congress candidate from Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, Gaurav Gogoi, on Tuesday.

Priyanka landed at Jorhat Airport at around 11.45 am from where she proceeded to Titabor to lead the roadshow.

Immediately after arrival, Priyanka was taken to a flower-bedecked vehicle. Party workers and the supporters waited there to welcome her.

In her 15-minute speech, Priyanka lashed out at the BJP claiming that the BJPled government indulged in large-scale corruption and price hike has crippled the normal life of the common people of the country.

“Instead of the politics of values, the BJP-led government has created an environment of divisive mentality by creating unrest in the country through caste discrimination and religious polarization. In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the people of the country have decided with courage in their hearts and determination to oust the BJP from power this time,” she said.

“The people understand that if the BJP is put back in power this time, the self-sacrifice of the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country will be in vain and the Constitution written at the expense of the martyrs will be threatened,” she said.

“But the Congress party is determined to protect the Constitution of the country and ensure that every person will have the right to live with equal dignity based on the Constitution,” the Congress leader said.

“The minimum wage will be increased for tea workers in Assam, ST status will be granted to six ethnic groups and the Citizenship Amendment Act will be repealed as soon as the government changes at the Centre,” she promised.

Accompanied by more than 10,000 people, Priyanya led a three-km-long roadshow from Titabar Tinali to Titabor Na-ali.

She also visited Rajiv Bhavan in Titabar and paid tribute to the portrait of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Gaurav Gogoi highlighted several burning issues of the state and said the ethnic issues of the state would be resolved if the Congress formed the government at the Centre this time.

Gogoi assured the people that ST status would be accorded to six communities of the state.
