Couple booked for cheating property buyer of `55 lakh

- AISHWARYA IYER /

A couple has been booked for allegedly cheating a man of Rs55 lakh on the pretext of selling a property in the Spring Mill Compound, Dadar. However, the complainant later came to know that due to legal reasons, the asset could not be transferred in his name. Interestingly, the aggrieved even forged a sale deed to get back his money.

In his complaint lodged with the RAK Marg police on Monday, Nagesh Modar, 57, said that he is a retiree living in the Naigaon area of Dadar. One of his relatives lives in the Spring Mill Compound and next to her resided one Sachin Gholap. He had sold his property to his relative Chandrakanth Patole and his wife Varsha. After Gholap’s death, the couple decided to sell the property.

Modar expressed interest in the deal and met the Patoles in June 2022. The complainant agreed to buy the property for Rs61 lakh. As per the agreement, Rs1 lakh was to be paid to Gholap’s widow and the remaining to the accused couple. Till February 2023, Modar paid Rs55 lakh and promised to pay the remaining Rs5 lakh after getting the possession.

However, he came to know about the 'fraud' in October 2023 when he submitted the agreement to the Mill committee.

Interestingly, the aggrieved even forged an agreement and showed it to local MLA to get back his money

It informed that the property couldn't be transferred to Modar's name. He came to know that the asset was still under Gholap's name. Since he died, it could be only transferred to his widow's name.

Modar then approached the local MLA, Kalidas Kolambkar, who held a meeting with the Patoles. He asked them to return the money, however, the couple coaxed Modar to forge an agreement, stating that the deal had been cancelled and the money returned. They assured that the whopping payment will be given back soon, alleged Modar. They even showed the fake document to Kolambkar. However, the couple didn't return the money, read the complaint.
