Hey Ram! Pickpockets strike gold at BJP Lord Ram’s roadshow

- BISWAJEET BANERJEE /

During a grand roadshow featuring BJP's iconic Lord Ram, Arun Govil, accompanied by Sita, played by Deepika Chikhalia, and Laxman, portrayed by Sunil Lahiri, in Meerut, pickpockets seized the opportunity, making away with wallets, mobile phones, and cash from unsuspecting attendees.

Police have reported over two dozen cases of pickpocketing during the roadshow when the city roads were choc-o-block with onlookers.

Anuradha Sharma, a trader from the Nauchandi area, recounted his experience, stating, "I stepped out to catch a glimpse of Ram and Sita. The crowd was chanting 'Jai Sri Ram,' and I joined in, raising my hands in excitement. However, upon returning to my shop, I realised that someone had stolen Rs36,000 from me."

His complaint echoes the sentiments of many others who fell victim to the pickpockets’ tactics during the roadshow which passed the main market areas of the city.

BJP leader Alok Sisodiya also fell prey to the thieves, losing his mobile phone during the roadshow. He said that over a dozen BJP workers had their phones stolen as well, highlighting the widespread nature of the pickpocketing incidents.

One incident was reported near Nandan Cinema, adding to the list of targeted areas. Police suspect the involvement of a Delhi-based gang in orchestrating the thefts and have detained three individuals in connection with the crimes.

The roadshow, held in Meerut, marked a poignant moment as the trio embarked on a political journey together to rally support for Govil, who is contesting as a BJP candidate. Commencing from the Mansa Devi temple of Meerut, the roadshow wound its way through the city streets, evoking memories of the iconic characters from "Ramayana."

“At various intersections, people showered flowers at them. People jostled with each other to have a darshan of tele Ram and Sita. The road show provided ample chance for people to interact with the beloved actors,” said Sisodia.
