BJP using regional netas to woo Delhi

- GAURAV VIVEK BHATNAGAR NEW DELHI

With Congress-AAP alliance working on the ground in Delhi, BJP has got several of its regional leaders from other states to campaign in the national capital. The party believes they would be able to provide the necessary impetus to its campaigning for several Lok Sabha seats here.

DIVERSE DEMOGRAPHIC MIX

With Delhi having a diverse demographic mix owning to its being the national capital, and being situated close to a number of north Indian states, BJP has got several of its state chief ministers and ministers from the region to accompany its candidates during the filing of their nominations and for the road shows and public meetings.

DHAMI FACTOR

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accompanied BJP candidates from South Delhi, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and from East Delhi, Harsh Malhotra, as they filed their nominations last week. Both the constituencies have a sizeable population from the hill state and adjoining regions.

Dhami, under whom BJP formed the second consecutive government in Uttarakhand, has in his speeches been talking about the “historic decisions that have been taken under Prime Minister

Narendra Modi”, in particular the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act, the reading down of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the ban on triple talaq. Incidentally, Uttarakhand is the first state to pass own Uniform Civil Code, now a promise of BJP for the LS poll.

Dhami has been raising religious issues like the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya to appeal to the ‘pahari’ voter. Besides, he has also spoken about the developmental and infrastructure works undertaken by the BJP.

Delhi’s BJP in-charge and former Haryana minister OP Dhankar also accompanied the party’s candidate Kamaljeet Sehrawat when she filed her nomination from West Delhi. They both belong to the Jat community, which has a significant presence in this constituency that neighbours Haryana.

PURI TO WOO SIKHS?

This apart, the party has also got Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who contested the Amritsar seat in 2019, to woo the Sikhs. Puri accompanied candidates at the time of filing of the nomination and has been addressing public meetings. There is a large population of Sikhs in South Delhi, West Delhi and Chandni Chowk. Puri, along with BJP national secretaries Manjinder Singh Sirsa and RP Singh, has also been active in wooing Sikh voters.
