Diamond workers mobilize to vote

- SURAT

As the political landscape intensifies ahead of the polling day on May 7, over 30,000 voters associated with the diamond and textile sectors in Varachha and Katargam, the thriving hubs of Surat, are gearing up to exercise their democratic right in their hometown of Rajkot. Political parties have orchestrated arrangements for private luxury buses to ferry voters from Surat to Rajkot late on Monday night, ensuring their participation in the electoral process.

In a bid to mobilize voters, banners urging residents of Varachha, Katargam, Sarthana, and Mota Varachha to journey to Rajkot on polling day have emerged across these localities, signaling a concerted effort to maximize voter turnout.

The phenomenon of Rajkot voters employed in Surat returning to their hometowns during elections is not new. However, with the Surat Lok Sabha seat clinched uncontested by BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal, attention has shifted towards engaging and appeasing Rajkot voters residing in Surat.

Both the BJP and the Congress have taken proactive measures, arranging private buses to facilitate the transportation of voters to Rajkot. This strategic move underscores the significance attached to the Rajkot Lok Sabha seat, particularly in light of recent developments surrounding the Kshatriya agitation against Union Minister Parshottam Rupala over controversial remarks.

The Congress has nominated Paresh Dhanani, former leader of the opposition in the Gujarat Assembly, as its candidate for the Rajkot seat, further elevating its profile. Dhanani, along with Rupala, has conducted extensive outreach efforts in Surat, organizing meetings to mobilize support from Rajkot voters residing in the city.

As the electoral battleground heats up, the mobilization of diamond and textile workers highlight the pivotal role they play in shaping the electoral outcome. Their journey back to Rajkot symbolizes a commitment to civic engagement and democratic participation, amplifying the significance of their vote in shaping the political landscape.

With the spotlight firmly fixed on the Rajkot Lok Sabha seat, the efforts of political parties to woo voters highlight the fierce competition and the stakes involved in this electoral contest. As polling day approaches, all eyes are on Rajkot as it prepares to play a decisive role in shaping Gujarat's political trajectory.
