SURYA’S SHOW IN MUMBAI

Terrific bowling effort helped Mumbai Indians restrict Sunrisers

- HARIDEV PUSHPARAJ / Mumbai

Suryakumar Yadav’s scintillating hundred and a tidy bowling effort helped the Mumbai Indians thump Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets in their IPL clash at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Monday.

Chasing 174 for victory, Suryakumar Yadav’s 102 off 51 balls comprising 12 fours and six maximums and Tilak Varma’s 37 powered the Mumbai Indians to victory as they reached 174/3 in 17.2 overs.

The unconquered 143-run partnership between Suryakumar and Varma was the highlight of the chase.

The Mumbai Indians put up a disciplined bowling performance led by skipper Hardik Pandya and Piyush Chawla to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 173/8 in 20 overs in their IPL clash at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Monday.

Pandya (3/31) and Chawla (3/33) were the chief architects of their bowling effort where debutant Anshul Kamboj scalped his first IPL wicket and the great Jasprit Bumrah showcased another tidy bowling masterpiece.

However, Pat Cummins’ innings of 35 provided Sunrisers the fillip they needed as the Aussie struck 16 runs off the last over apart from the wide that made it a 17-run over eventually. The Sunrisers Hyderabad were off to a quickfire start with Travis Head coming into his own in the powerplay.

Head was probably having his lucky day as he survived on a no-ball from debutant Anshul Kamboj on the fifth ball of the fifth over, who bowled him on a full delivery on the off stump but his joy was shortlived.

SRH reached 51/0 in five overs with Head in rollicking form at 37 off 20 balls going at a strike rate of 185 much to the chagrin of the Mumbai Indians bowlers, who were

feeling the heat. Ultimately, it was the experienced Jasprit Bumrah who could provide the breakthrough as he scalped the wicket of Abhishek Sharma caught behind by Ishan Kishan.

At the end of the powerplay, the Sunrisers had maintained a healthy runrate of over nine as they got to to 56/1. Head was still there in the company of new man Mayank Agarwal. The Australian star was dropped by Nuwan Thushara off Kamboj’s bowling in the eighth over. Kamboj finally got his first IPL wicket castling Abhishek Sharma to pull things back for the Mumbai Indians.

Piyush Chawla, who was introduced into the attack in the 11th over was the man who got the back of dangerman Head. Head was caught at deep backward square leg by Tilak Varma as the Mumbai Indians got the much needed wicket they were looking for as Head has the potential to get his team to huge totals. As Nitish Kumar Reddy holed out to Kamboj at covers off skipper Hardik Pandya on 20, the home side and their fans were gripped by a renewed sense of energy.

Chawla turned out to be the wrecker again as he rattled the timber of the hard-hitting Heinrich Klaasen as Mumbai Indians took the driver’s seat with SRH languishing at 96/5 in 12.1 overs. The Sunrisers were in all sorts of trouble at 101/5 after 13 overs and needed some fireworks from the lower order batsmen to get to a fighting total.
