TAKE A BOW!

The trend that has topped 2024’s popularity list

- PRATHIKSHA SHETTY First

Tying their delicate strings around everyone’s hearts, bows have taken the fashion landscape by storm. Escaping the confines of Instagram grids, the bow is charming its way through the streets, runways, and beyond. Thanks to the rise of ultra-feminine aesthetics like balletcore, barbiecore, and coquettecore on social media, bows have made a triumphant comeback, basking in a welldeserved moment in the spotlight. While their recent resurgence has grabbed headlines, the humble ribbon has never truly faded away from sight; it holds a history that is far from onedimensional.

Strings of history

Bows have danced hand-in-hand with fashion for centuries, their evolution mirroring cultural shifts and societal whims. The 16th and 17th centuries witnessed the rise of bows as a fashionable emblem of status and affluence across genders, particularly embraced by the aristocracy. Fast forward to the extravagant world of 18th-century France, where Marie Antoinette, the queen of fashion excess, took the bow to new heights with her towering hairpieces adorned with cascades of ribbons. As the pendulum swung towards Victorian propriety, the bow underwent a subtle metamorphosis, transitioning into a more demure accessory. No longer the flamboyant symbol of aristocracy, it became a mark of femininity and delicate charm. This era saw dainty bows adorning collars, corsets, and hats, adding a touch of

whimsy to the otherwise conservative silhouettes.

The 20th century saw its resurgence in various forms, from the playful hair bows in the 1920s to the chic neckties of the 50s. French New Wave icons like Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, and Anna Karina elevated the bow by infusing it with a flirtatious charm. In her 1927 collection, famed designer Elsa Schiaparelli showcased the nowiconic wool jacquard sweater with a trompe l’oeil bow. In recent years, renowned pop stars Madonna and Lady Gaga subverted the innocence associated with hair bows by pairing them with bustiers, black rubber bracelets, and clashing punk studs. The bow has always been more than just a pretty accessory; it’s a cultural chameleon, ever-evolving to reflect the zeitgeist of its era.

Modern-Day Bow-Mania

Moving from Pinterest boards to strutting on the runway and red carpet, the oh-so-delicate detail has waltzed into every corner of fashion, from street style to ready-to-wear.

The humble ribbon has tied itself securely around our hearts – strapped to heels, cinching waists on grungy leather jackets, decorating gloves and stacked onto everything from avantgarde gowns to tailored blazers – and it’s showing no signs of letting up any time soon.

One of the early bow adopters in the fashion space, Sandy Liang, has been infusing the hyper-femme detail into her collections since her debut. Paying homage to whimsy girlhood, the coveted designer’s Spring/Summer 2024 creations were no different, with models carrying larger-than-life bows as handbags and dressed in defiantly feminine dresses – all tied up with the preppy accessory.

Simone Rocha, who has never met a bow she didn’t like, took it to the next level this season, sending models down

Summer 2024 Couture Show, Jennifer Lopez jumped on the bow bandwagon by tying a ribbon that matched her ethereal green gown.

Back home, Khushi Kapoor channelled Blair Waldorf-inspired preppy charm at Dior’s Fall 2023 show in India, sporting a velvet bow tied around her sleek half updo. More recently, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja added a feminine touch to her all-black date night look with a statement pink bow, while Shilpa Shetty rocked a mini blazer dress from MACH & MACH featuring silver bows that twinkled on the belt and all over the sleeves. From subtle nods to flamboyant flourishes, stars and design maestros across the globe are proving that the bow’s versatility knows no bounds.

No longer confined to a rigid idea of femininity, bows have securely tied a knot around the fashion landscape’s heart. More utilitarian than their reputation would have you believe, they can be elegant, coquetteish, or goth – it’s up to you to decide.

The humble ribbon has proved to be a true chameleon, adapting to every style imaginable. Consider this year the perfect opportunity to embrace your girlhood with a hint of empowered femininity and tie one on to get in on the bow trend in style.
