A development is expected soon on the proposed ban on private production of Oxytocin, used to prevent excessive bleeding during childbirth. Due to apparent misuse of the drug, the Health Ministry sought to ban private producers from making and marketing it in the country. To meet local supplies, the Centre appointed Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. But as doctors cautioned that the move could affect hospital supplies, the private ban was deferred. Subsequently, private producers approached the Delhi High Court. Presently, the HC stay on the private ban stands up to December 15. Doctors, private producers of the drug and government are keenly watching what happens next.
