Mamata stable after fall; doctor issues clarification
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who suffered an injury to her forehead and nose on Thursday, remained stable on Friday. A team of doctors from the Staterun SSKM Hospital treated Ms. Banerjee at her Kolkata residence.
Meanwhile, SSKM Hospital director Manimoy Bandyopadhyay, who had on Thursday created much political speculation by saying that the injury was caused due to a push from behind, clarified that he meant a “sensation of pushing from behind which led to the fall”.
“This is a sensation of pushing from behind which led to the fall. Our job is to treat and we have done that. There was a misinterpretation of what I said last evening.” Dr. Bandyopadhyay told presspersons on Friday.
Senior officials of the Kolkata Police visited the residence of the Chief Minister, but there was no clarity on whether any complaint had been lodged in connection with the injury to Chief Minister.
Leaders from the Opposition and the Trinamool Congress targeted each other on the injuries to the Chief Minister.
The Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, allegedly mocked Ms. Banerjee’s fall. “Her head is spinning and she is falling regularly,” he said.
A number of Ministers and leaders of the Trinamool Congress raised the issue of Mr. Adhikari’s remarks and demanded an apology from him. “While the entire Bengal prays for Mamata Banerjee’s swift recovery, Suvendu Banerjee spews derogatory remarks about her health,” State’s Minister Snehasish Chakraborty said, adding “We vehemently condemn his malicious utterances. Is this the behaviour expected of a LoP? We demand an immediate apology!”.
