Vehicle check intensi ed at Yercaud foothills in Salem

Police and transport department o cials instruct drivers to comply with the prescribed speed limit of 30 kmph; vehicles found speeding and carrying excess passengers to face action

ed vehicle check at the foothills of Yercaud and gave strict instructio­ns to the drivers to comply with the prescribed speed limit of 30 kmph.

On April 30, a private bus carrying 65 passengers fell into a gorge on Yercaud Ghat Road, and ve persons lost their lives in the accident.

Following this, the Salem district administra­tion instructed the police and regional transport o cers to check the vehicles and take action on the crew of those that were found speeding and carrying excess passengers.

With Yercaud receiving heavy rain for the past three days, the number of tourists visiting the hill town has increased from Saturday.

Residents have demanded early completion of renovation work under way at the swimming pool at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Salem city.

Apart from the public, district and State-level swimmers practice in the pool. As the pool tiles and toilets were in a damaged condition, the regular users wanted them xed.

The Sports Developmen­t Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), which owns the swimming pool at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, sanctioned ₹ 18 lakh and started the work in February.
