HYDERABAD ROUND-UP
SCR triumphs
South Central Railway (SCR) scored a convincing 8354 win over host YMCA (Secunderabad) in the final of the fifth Samuel Vasanth Kumar memorial floodlit basketball tournament on Saturday. It was sweet revenge for SCR, who had lost the final to YMCA in the Hyderabad District Basketball Association annual league tournament. Spurred on by its Indian Railways cager Santhosh and the energetic shooter Vijay, SCR ensured it stayed ahead even if it was by a slender margin. YMCA was left playing catch up, its power forward Vivek not quite getting the room to unleash his drivein baskets.
Giridhar Govada, proprietor, Giridhar & Co., Chartered Accountants, gave away the winner’s
prize while Dr. S.R. Prem Raj, former director, Sports, GHMC, presented the runnersup prize. Indian hockey team goalkeeper at the Atlanta Olympics, Alloysius Edwards, gave away the best coach award to Liju Abraham of SCR and Ruth Vasantha presented the Most Valuable Player Award to P. Vivek of YMCA (Secunderabad). Abhijit Sen Gupta, former Deputy Editor, The Hindu, gave away the Most Promising Player Award to Tejendra Kumar of Sanathnagar PG while Arumugam Vijay of SCR received the Player of the Final Award from Rachel Charan.
The result: Final: SCR 83 (Vijay 26, Akash 19, Santhosh 16) bt YMCA (Secunderabad) 54 (Vivek 13, Rohan 12).
