Olympic goldwinnin­g swimmer Schooling retires

Joseph Schooling, who defeated Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly to win Singapore’s first and only Olympic gold medal at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, announced his retirement on Tuesday.

It was the American legend Phelps’ last individual race of his career and came after he won a record eight golds at the 2012 London Olympics. “A time comes when everyone has to flip the page, turn a new chapter. This is my time to do that, this is my official retirement,” the 28yearold Schooling told local media. “There are no regrets,” he added at a later media conference.

Schooling holds eight Singapore records, six in individual events and two in the relays.

Masters National TT from today

The sixday UTT 30th Masters National table tennis championsh­ips, featuring about 2000 players, will be held at the Saroornaga­r Indoor Stadium from Wednesday. Competitio­ns will be held in the agegroups of 40 and above to 80 and above for men and women and team events. The championsh­ips are held under the newlyelect­ed Indian Veterans Table Tennis Committee (IVTTC), headed by K.K. Maheshwari, who is also the president of Telangana State Table Tennis Associatio­n. Maharashtr­a, the overall champion in the previous edition, is the team to beat.

Vedic wins U-15 title

FIDErated Vedic Tolwala won the under15 title in the Pragathi Chess Foundation tournament with five points from five rounds.

Shilpa bags silver

Shilpa Diggai of Telangana bagged the 90kg silver of the 4044 years agegroup in the World powerlifti­ng congress National championsh­ip in Delhi. She came up with an effort of 85kg in squat, 40kg in bench and 102.5kg in deadlift for a total of 227.5kg. Ruchi of Delhi won the gold with a combined effort of 300kg (squat 120kg, bench 50kg and deadlift 130kg).
