Fine show by Telangana sailors

Telanagana’s P. Govardhan, a student of Nallakunta Government School here, won his first National title by claiming the overall gold in the National sailing held at the Umiam Lake in Shillong. “Govardhan is a lightweigh­t and dominated the course with a consistent performanc­e across conditions but he needs to get heavier and fitter before his next Nationals in Secunderab­ad in July,” said coach Suheim Sheikh.

The Komaravell­y sisters Deekshita and Lahari from Udbhav School won gold and silver. India No. 2 Banny Bongur pipped

Rizwan Mohammad of Pattigadda Govt. School (Hyderabad) by just two points to take bronze. Suheim, president at Yacht Club of Secunderab­ad where all these medallists train, was declared the ‘best coach’ and the Telangana team won the ‘best team’ award.

In the under18 double hander Thanuja Kameshwar and Ganesh Peerkatla won a silver and Vaishnavi Veeravamsh­asm got the gold in the under18 single hander. Dharani Laveti and crew Mallesh also won a silver to take Telangana’s medal tally to nine.

Jaideep wins under-13 title

FIDErated S. Jaideep Reddy won the under13 title in the Pragathi Chess Foundation chess championsh­ip tournament with five points from five rounds.

Hockey India on Tuesday announced a new National Women’s League featuring the top domestic teams in the country. The league, to be played in two phases, will feature the top eight teams from the recent National Championsh­ips.

The first phase will be played in Ranchi from April 30May 9.

The teams: Haryana, Maharashtr­a, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Mizoram, Manipur, and Odisha.
