Telangana sees fall in malaria cases since ’18

- Siddharth Kumar Singh

World Malaria Day was observed on April 25, which commemorates and recognises global e›orts to control the disease.

With the 2024 World Malaria Day theme being “Accelerating the ‚ght against malaria for a more equitable world”, data shows that Telangana has witnessed a four-fold decrease in malaria cases since year 2018.

The State recorded 1,792 cases in 2018, which came down to 420 in 2023.

According to the data records of Telangana’s Director of Public Health (DPH), the State recorded 1,792 malaria cases in 2018, followed by 1,709 cases in 2019, 872 in 2020, 871 in 2021, 611 in 2022, 420 in 2023 and 46 cases recorded in 2024 - till date.

The last malaria death recorded in the State was in 2016, and thereafter no deaths have been recorded, said a senior Health department o©cial.

The decline in case numbers can be attributed to the proactive measures implemented by the State Health Department to curb disease transmission and also the increasing awareness of people. By identifying high-risk endemic villages in six to seven districts where malaria prevalence is pronounced, the department ensures targeted intervention.

“We conduct pre-monsoon assessments based on the past two years’ case data,” he stated.

Broken road

The road from Lingampally crossroad, Kachiguda, to Raghavendra Swamy temple, was dug up by the HMWS&SB for pipeline works. But, after the work was over, it was left like that and not recarpeted. Now, the road is completely broken and as a result, tra©c is getting (Picture sent by reader P.V. Srinivas Sreelekha)

jammed. Pedestrians are also ‚nding it tough to walk on this road that is full of ditches. I request the authorities concerned to recarpet the road immediately.

Rainwater harvesting

The lanes and bylanes of Hyderabad are undergoing changes daily with

evolving circumstances. Previously, bituminous roads were prevalent, albeit with limited durability owing to susceptibility to water ªow. Now, the GHMC is implementing CC (Cement Concrete) roads, o›ering greater longevity but at a higher cost. However, without adequate rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems in place within city limits, the risk of waterlogging rises as CC roads do not facilitate water absorption. To address this, GHMC and HMWS&SB should mandate G+2 buildings to install RWH structures and construct enclosed pit RWH systems across the city. While existing RWH systems are limited, there’s a need to enhance both their quality and quantity. I hope an increase in groundwater level as each drop counts. Syed Naimathullah Faiyaz

No free water

Raheja Vistas is situated in IDA, Nacharam, and is under the jurisdiction of IALA, Nacharam, for all civic facilities. But, residents here are deprived of the 20 KL per month free water, which are extended to other residents and residential complexes governed by the GHMC. I urge the authorities concerned to give this bene‚t to the residents of Raheja Vistas, IDA, Nacharam.

Need flyover

Tra©c from Balanagar to Sanathnagar is heavy throughout the day, and commuters need to take a long and painful detour after crossing the Fathenagar ªyover. This is the situation since decades. I request the authorities concerned to provide a permanent solution to this long pending problem by constructing another ªyover next to the existing ªyover at the junction.

Voters’ request

My wife and I submitted requests to be registered as voters to ensure that we get an opportunity to vote in favour of our democracy. But despite of seeking help from Meeseva and submitting all the necessary documents, the requests have been rejected without any explanation. We tried contacting the Quthbullapur AERO o©ce to investigate the matter, but the number does not work and o©ce address is not given. Do the needful. Somdev Banerjee
