Sport Liverpool needs late goal from Salah to escape with a draw at United Verstappen leads Red Bull to a 12 finish

Mohamed Salah scored a late equaliser from a penalty kick as Liverpool escaped Old Trafford with a single point in a 22 draw with Manchester United to climb to even on points with Premier League leader Arsenal.

Salah stroked home in the 84th minute for his sixth league goal at Old Trafford, the most of any visiting player in the league’s history, overtaking Steven Gerrard’s five.

With seven games remaining in the neckandnec­k title race, Liverpool and Arsenal have 71 points

Salah draws Liverpool level against United. with the Gunners leading on goal difference. Holder Manchester City is third on 70 points, while United is sixth.

Luis Diaz got Liverpool on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute when Dominik Szoboszlai swung in a

corner that Darwin Nunez headed to the unmarked Colombian who hooked in a volley from close range.

But Bruno Fernandes scored a wild goal in the 50th minute when he latched on to a loose Liverpool pass and lobbed the ball from the centre circle past keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Kobbie Mainoo had the Old Trafford faithful roaring with his rocket from just inside the 18yard box that sailed into the far top corner in the 67th minute.

Liverpool was then awarded its penalty when Harvey Elliott was taken down in the box.

The results: Premier League: Manchester United 2 (Fernandes 50, Mainoo 67) drew with Liverpool 2 (Diaz 23, Salah 84-pen).

Serie A: Frosinone 0 drew with Bologna 0.

World champion Max Verstappen got back to winning ways on Sunday with a third straight poletoflag victory at the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix, leading team mate Sergio Perez across the line for a Red Bull 12 at Suzuka.

The Dutchman suffered his first retirement since 2022 in Melbourne last time out to snap a ninerace winning streak but had no mechanical issues this week in a dominant performanc­e to make it three wins from four races this season.

Verstappen, who becomes only the second driver to win three consecutiv­e Japanese Grands Prix alongside seventimes World champion Michael Schumacher, now has a 13point lead in the driver standings over Perez.

Red Bull leads the constructo­r standings on 141 points ahead of Ferrari (120) and McLaren (69).

Ferrari’s other driver Carlos Sainz, the winner in Australia two weeks ago, rode fresher tyres in the latter stages of the race to grab the final podium spot, edging out Leclerc, who used a onestop strategy.

But the Spaniard was more than 20 seconds behind Verstappen, underlinin­g the gap between the teams in dry, sunny conditions.

McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fifth with the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Hamilton down in a disappoint­ing seventh and ninth respective­ly after a tactical strategy to switch to hard tyres early in the race backfired.
